Prashant -

Glad you brought this up. It's a tiny country rarely in the news. And one that relies almost entirely on the tourism dollar to survive. It's going to be interesting to watch how this plays out after this latest eventuality.

More sharia and extremism, bans on alcohol, insistence on the wearing of the freedom sack etc will lead naturally to less western tourists who go there primarilly to relax, go diving and swim on the idyllic white sand tropical beaches. Less western tourists of course will mean fewer dollars. Fewer dollars means a harder life for those lowest in their social pecking order. Because they have no other avenues to express dissent and the society is virtually a fiefdom, the solution for a hard life will be more Islam. So it could become a vicious circle - where the newly self-appointed leaders taking advantage of the trappings of imaginary power are not seen to be Islamic enough.

Yet these are the same people who made the astonishing suggestion that they all move to Australia. (or India - or any place that they can buy a piece of due to the possibility of their islands being floooded by (possible) large sea level rises. The best idea would be for them to use their current tourist diollars to dredge sand from the sea surrounding their atoll and raise the level of the land that may be affected.

Of course that will never happen in Australia's case - it would not be possible or justifiable under any criteria - economically, socially or politically - despite the best efforts of the misguided left and others living in a fantasy world to convince the Australian populace of the (never-realised) cultural enrichment of an invasion of 400,000 Sunni muslims.
