It really does matter

Of course the world will change and the political influences will shift drastically when oil is replaced, and even when oil just begins to be replaced. Markets will begin shifting as soon as there is any concrete possibility of real movement in that direction. The trouble with your point is that this will not be happening for the foreseeable future and an awful lot can happen before it becomes of consequence.

Electric cars are known to consume more energy than gasoline driven ones (and let's not even discuss ethanol). We all would love it if we decreased dependence upon ME oil but we must address the realities as they stand now, as comforting as it is to anticipate this happening one day, far in the future. By the time the transition finally comes around, we could be in a bad place.
