The best "reason" I've found on the Web so far

Dear Daniel Pipes,

I don't find your immediate analysis of "Why We (Hamas Gaza Palestinians] Fight" very plausible, in part because of omissions by you.

1. There is the killing of the 2 16-yearold Israeli teen-agers, and the 1 American-Israeli teen-ager, who were found murdered, and Hamas merely claimed that the "hands" that did it were "blessed," while denying specific knowledge of the perpetrators, and refusing to affirm or deny responsibility.

2. There is the 16-year-old Palestinian who was found dear, and burned alive.

3. There was the subsequent re-arrest of the Palestinian prisoners, particularly those exchanged for Gilad Shalit.

4. There was the subsequent almost complete "cleansing" of the West Bank of most Hamas operatives or sympathizers.

Furthermore, you could have discussed the tactical initial victory, followed by the strategic defeat of Egypt by Israel in 1973 - which accordingly gave Sadat the ability to make Peace with Israel - even though he subsequently was assassinated by Muslim Brotherhood elements in the military.

And there was the withdrawal from Lebanon by Israel and the Hezbollah bombarded of Israel with missiles, and Hezbollah subsequently claimed "Victory."

Perhaps an explanation by you of the views on "Arrogance," "Pride," & "humiliation" from the point of view of Muslim, Islamic, Islamist, and Arab Religion and Culture might enlighten us all on how un-Western are the Gaza Hamas Palestinians in the tactics of their ("military") Jihad, might enlighten your readers.

In the mean time, here's an article which I found and which I think does a better job of explaining the immediate and specific motives of Hamas which you have done here so far:
