Muslims - 3 days of plundering of unsurrendering town

Dear Mr Daniel Pipes,

Thank you for posting my question from September 2nd and discussion so far.

I have another one, for anyone here.

We all know that after conquering Damascus in 634 Muslim forces for three days carried out unlimited killing, rape, plunder, enslavement, and arson.

Same happened in 1453 in Constantinople, again said to be for three days.

My qustion is where in Islam doctrine mentions that city that not surrenders should be subjected to such "measures": is it in Quran, Hadiths, Sharia, tradition, whatever?
