"though I personally could not possibly vote for Trump, I will root for him to win"
Doesn't this contradict your statement just after the GOP convention, "For the Republican Party to recover its soul, Trump needs to be thumped in November. Purged of his influence, the party of Lincoln and Reagan can rebuild."
I'm curious, what prompted the change in thinking?

Good question.
I have come to see the Republican party as far more deeply corrupted than I did back in July 2016. For more on this, see Max Boot, "What the Hell Happened to My Republican Party?" Foreign Policy, October 18, 2016.
As he puts it, "The party of principled conservatism, of promoting freedom at home and abroad, has become a party of conspiracy-mongering, authoritarianism, and white power."
At this point, I don't see how the party can "recover its soul." So, I advocate a short-term solution.
