Turning the cultural tablesReader comment on item: Florida Museum Celebrates the Loss of Hagia Sophia Submitted by Ryan Ewald (United States), May 29, 2017 at 12:54 I would love to use the current weapon of Islam apologists who try to use their wildly inaccurate claims about the Crusades as a reason why Islam is angry toward the west. We can just as well claim (accurately) that the West for most of Islamic history till the 1700s was the target of repeated assaults by Islamic invaders bent on the brutal conquest and coerced conversion of all Europe. Let's do a whole series on Western trauma at the hands of invading Muslims despoiling ancient wonders of architecture, literature and science. Let's talk about the destruction of ancient Christian and Jewish communities in the Levant, Egypt and North Africa. Let's talk about the near annihilation of the Persian religion of Zoroastrianism. The first holy war as we understand it today was launched by Muslims against their neighbors. Jihad came a hell of a lot earlier than Crusade, and continued long after Crusading was abandoned.
