would you build a home in a wasp nest?Reader comment on item: Explaining Israel's Timid Security Establishment Submitted by Charles Martel (United States), Jul 1, 2020 at 04:16 That's what the Jewish people did in 1948 by stubbornly insisting upon recapitulating their home in and amongst millions of their sworn enemies. This was a tactical error. As a result Israel exists as a nation of 6 million with the sword of Damocles perched tenuously and permanently overhead. Here, biblical imperative trumps common sense. Had saner minds prevailed, a Jewish homeland could have been launched almost anywhere else - and certainly somewhere not entirely surrounded by bloodthirsty adversaries. Now Israel faces an equal threat from Gaza and the West Bank. It is exhausting to watch and erosive to experience. And it wastes potential that might be used far more productively. Worst of all, as America teeters on the brink of a second civil war, what happens to Israel if her best friend collapses from within? Finally, before anyone deigns to attack me for my viewpoint, keep in mind I'm the child of holocaust survivors.
