Sultan Erdogan Ottoman dreams of past gloryReader comment on item: Will Turkey and Greece Clash over a Tiny Island? Submitted by Philo Pater (United States), Sep 17, 2020 at 09:15 Another well written-article and thoughtful analysis by our beloved and highly respected Dr. Pipes. Regretfully President Erdogan and his Islamist base in Turkey are reliving the dreams of past glory. They forgot that the Ottoman Empire was the sick-man of Europe for a long long time. Its grip on existence was only extended so long as it was useful for European powers of the time. I noted however that the US has lifted an embargo on defensive weapons for one year to Cyprus, and US Secretary of State Pompeo has paid a visit not long ago. Some analysts take these actions as a mild reminder to Turkey not go over board. Hopefully, the USA will not need to repeat its action when Erdogan initially refused to let an innocent American Pastor go free. More importantly, hopefully the Turkish population will see through him and trounce in the coming election!
