Misunderstood Nature of Palestinian War

Reader comment on item: Arafat's Failure May Offer Seeds of Hope

Submitted by Donald Vogel (United States), May 8, 2002 at 01:06

I think you misinterpret the fundamental nature of Israel's war with the "Palestinians" which is simply an extention of its ongoing war with all the Arab states.

I think that this war is fueled by the United States (as it had been by the British before) which is playing the old game of divide and rule. The United States wants trouble in the region to continue.

How better to explain its pressure on Israel to preserve Arafat at all costs while, at the same time, we conduct a murderous campaign against Bin Laden? His (Arafat's) survival is guaranteed to perpetuate the conflict.

To believe that the US has been trying to get peace in the region since 1967 is to say that its foreign policy is designed and executed by cretins, incompetents, or both. (Come to think of it, you may be right after all!!)

If I am right, however, then war in the region will continue even in a post-Arafat era as long as major powers have "interests" to pursue in the region.

Keep up the good struggle;

Donald Vogel
