Disclosure Movement

Reader comment on item: Government for Sale [to the Saudis]

Submitted by Charlie (United States), Dec 4, 2002 at 12:53

Dear Dr. Pipes,
As usual your latest article is right on the money. Taxpaying American citizens need to do more. A disclosure movement needs to be started. Congress needs to pass disclosure laws. Everyone in public office needs to disclose foreign gifts of any form on their federal tax returns even after they leave their public job. In addition, a declaration form must be made public before they seek election to any public office, just like their tax returns. Elected officials should also be banned from receiving cash, gifts or donations from foreign goverments, their agents, or entities for a period of at least 10 years after they leave office as a cooling off period. We need and have a right to know who retired ambassadors, congress people or administration appointees' interests are really represented when they speak publicliy after leaving office. I believe this is desperately needed to boost the confidence in our elected and appointed officials.
