Jews in the NewsReader comment on item: The Middle East and Islam Dominate U.S. Public Life Submitted by Mitzi Alvin (United States), Jan 1, 2007 at 19:28 Let's face it. The world is obsessed with whatever happens to the Jews. Israel is the Jewish state. I get the N.Y. Times and it is rare when a day goes by without mention of the Israeli/Palestinian crises. Today on NPR there was an item on the news portion about some "illegal" settlements in the West Bank posted by Israel's Peace Now party. Like that was something significant. There are bombs going off in Thailand, war in Somalia that threatens countries on its borders, paralyzing snow storms. . . I could go on. Somehow NPR thought it important to focus on some dinky little trailers setting up camp in disputed territories. Israel is a tiny country roughly the size of New Jersey. Jews are a miniscule portion of the world's population, but somehow it figures into everyone's calculations. Why? I could give a dozen reasons, but none quite add up. My own take: the Jews invented God and no one wants to give them credit for it, nor can anyone forgive them for it.
