Reader comment on item: [Looting:] An Iraqi Tragedy

Submitted by Susan Bradford (United States), Apr 22, 2003 at 11:19

I am a native Californian and was living in So. Cal when chaos and looting descended upon the city of Los Angeles following the verdict of the Rodney King trial. Why would these people destroy their own city and area businesses? Are they any better than the Iraqi looters....To imply that Arabs are barbarian looters bent on destroying their own civilization while Americans and others are not smacks of racism.

In desperate times, people do desperate things....and the fact is, as the (British newspaper) Guardian reports, the U.S. Army ignored warnings from its own civilian advisers that could have preventing the looting of the museums. The U.S. preemptively launched this war, but managed to protect gold bullion and oil, but not the cultural heritage of one of the oldest cradles of civilization.
