Iraqis are no worse than AmericansReader comment on item: [Looting:] An Iraqi Tragedy Submitted by Sara Kenney (United States), Apr 24, 2003 at 19:21 ...The looting in Iraq was certainly not made by the majority of Iraqis, who are obviously upset by the destruction of their priceless historical and cultural artifacts, but by a small band ... The Iraqi people are not barbaric, violent and guilty of these crimes of theft and the destruction of their own heritage.Let me remind you of certain shameful acts of greed and self destruciton that Americans have carried out. Looting is certainly not uncommon here in America, the land of the free, the brave, and the supposedly educated. On the same day of the LA earthquake of '71, 73 people were arrested for looting in the city. After Hurricane Andrew, looting added to the tragic and horrible destruction of property and loss of life. The best example of American crimes against its own occured soon after the 911 tragedy. Only a few hours after the deaths of thousands of Americans, pieces of the buildings, planes and other wreckage were put up for auction on eBay! How could Americans do this! All they cared about is money even in the face of the horrific deaths of its own people. The Iraqis are no more barbaric than we are, my friends, especially since they have been under US sanctions and the cruelty of the Saddam regime for years. While we are sitting pretty with our free democracy, even now the Iraqis have to live day to day in the fear of who will be next in line. I think we should not accuse them of not gaurding their museums during the war that we waged on them. If we were truly liberating the people, we would have made sure that we protected the places and cultural relics that are dear to them.
