Pipes says what Bush Admin ThinksReader comment on item: War as Social Work? Submitted by Larry Derfner (United States), May 6, 2003 at 11:27 I really appreciate Pipes. He doesn't bother with any of this diplomatic sentimentality, no pretending that he gives much of a damn about the Iraqi people, or respects their right to run their own affairs. A couple of weeks ago he urged the U.S. to plan on occupying the place for a long, long time - and not to have any qualms about it, either. Now he says the U.S. has no moral obligation to help the Iraqi people - the "defeated," he calls them - even though the U.S. killed and maimed thousands, left a trail of destruction and threw their country into anarchy. This is the real right-wing talking - look out for No. 1 and screw everybody else. This, I believe, is the true heart of the Bush administration, and only Pipes has the audacity - or innocence - to give voice to it.My guess is that the Bush administration wishes it could muzzle Pipes. I say to him: Keep up the good work. I can't think of anybody who embarrasses conservative Republicans like he does.
