I respectfully disagree

You are right that the guiding principle of any military action should be US security (and other) interests. However, building a viable democracy in Iraq is as important for US security as the military victory against Saddam Hussein. The alternative is either a civil war (involving Turkey and Iran), or another rogue state, which will have direct implications for US security. If things go wrong again, another military action will be necessary, which will cost American lives again. Conversely, success of the social work in Iraq will have extremely positive implications for the entire region, which is a regon of vital intersts to the US.

Yes, social work needs to be done in the name of security. This is the reason for other similar situations, like in post-war Germany.
