Egypt was only a bit player in Soviet global calculus and there was no reason why the Soviets would have made any direct attack on Israel for the benefit of Egypt, that too on nuclear installations. Outside the old eastern bloc, the Soviet strategic interests were only 'containing' werstern allies by creating as many embarrasments to the west as possible. Direct militry intervention, never. Invasion of Afghanistan should be looked at as a continuation of the 18th-19th century Russian Empire's grab of Central Asia/Caucasus. All said and done, the USSR was keeping Islamic radicalism in a tight lid. The spread of Islamic radicalism in the last 20 years is one of the consequences of the fall of Soviet Union.
