To be honest, you aren't entirely wrong.Reader comment on item: [Fort Dix and] Jihad in Jersey Submitted by An American with Lots of Bark (United States), Jan 13, 2008 at 11:47 To be quite honest, we of the American public (or at least, what I see as the educated members of the American public) are actually quite aware of a tattered system of security within our United States. While I am not so up to date on current events as a result of my own carelessness, I can tell you that this is an issue that Americans have taken a notice and latched onto as an issue for these up and coming elections. The problem, however, is that as Americans by nature are such a diverse group from all over the world, it is difficult to find a unified way of thinking. In many ways, the word, "American," is more of a joke than anything as the United States of America were originally formed to be separate bodies loosely controlled by a Federal branch of government composed of delegates (the House and Senate). The purpose of my writing this reply is not to say that you are wrong and ignorant, because you aren't any more so than I would be when speaking of the fundamentals of the French and Spanish security. I merely want for you to know that there are we Yanks who at least have an idea of what is going on, and we are working on fixing it. I can also tell you that if matters continue on their current path of travel, that according to history's lessons we shall be seeing a rise in aggression from our college aged students pressing for change which is unlikely to have any terribly lasting affects. After all, Gerrymandering (the act of literally twisting voting districts to compose as many of a given political party as humanly possible) has been around since the districts were first conceived, and I do not see that little issue going away any time soon due to the fact that the only ones who can change such a thing are the ones who used them to get to where they are today. It was a messed up system from the start, as even our first proper president George Washington stated clearly that making a bi-party system will kill our country. Now look at us; freedom and democracy is now our biggest export next to firearms and citizens fooled into believing that they are educated. However, again, we few individuals who can still look at a situation and say, "Wait, you're "cutting" troops sent to Iraq by twenty-thousand by just not sending twenty-thousand troops in, and instead just not bringing two-thousand troops hope? Are you thinking they'll gain an immunity to bullets?" Unfortunately we're a little too informed (and in my case, young and poor) to get into office, though even then there are so many dead ends that I doubt that it would matter. A full uprooting of the system would be required, and that would involve Revolution. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
