Tough one indeed...Reader comment on item: [Fort Dix and] Jihad in Jersey Submitted by Joshua (United States), May 9, 2007 at 19:34 Deporting Imams who incite hate or jihad sounds reasonable and logical, except who will decide what is hate and what is conviction related to a religious belief? Monitoring speech inside a religious institution will not stop at the Mosques, and legislation is already on the table in relationship to monitoring and censoring speech in the churches ( example...will a pastor be asked to step down if he or she declares that homosexuality is despised by God under these circumstances?) Sticky situation, constitutional rights involved. Which brings me to a bizarre but relevant point... Part of my youth was wasted playing a game you may or may not be familiar with called Dungeons and Dragons. It was a role playing/fantasy game in which characters were assigned or rolled dice to indicate a player alignment. (Again, example; Good, Lawful good, neutral, evil, lawful evil.) A player with an evil alignment did evil irrational things that ended up getting them killed or in trouble constantly. What took me a while to understand however was the "lawful evil" alignment. These were characters who tried to stay off the radar with their evil deeds by playing the system and finding loopholes that would allow them to pull off outrageous behavior that seemed fishy but was perfectly legal. These characters were often ambiguous, and the common player or person could often be found defending their behavior because it was confusing by nature. In the end however, they were still evil and their plans usually came to a nasty head involving pawns and stupid players so they ended up smelling fresh as a daisy. Does this behavior sound familiar? Does anyone sense that the same thing is happening now to the United States and Great Britain, as well as other places around this earth? The real solution to this problem would be that these poeple would be refreshed with the mind of Christ; but try to explain that to someone who has been taught that Christ was a great teacher completely misunderstood by his own apostles and basically irrelevant to the big picture. Our great freedoms will be our undoing... Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
