Conspiracy theoryReader comment on item: T. E. Lawrence, American Tactician Submitted by Vijay (United Kingdom), Jan 24, 2010 at 09:02 T E Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident in the 30's. There is a widespread conspiracy theory among Arabs that he was killed in a plot by the British secret services for being pro-Arab. TEL is a hero among Arabs in the MiddleEast. The fate of Arab countries were decided among the Big Powers in the 1920s. For all his heroism and leadership, TEL was a second ranking army officer and he had no part in the political and diplomatic negotiations which decided the map of the ME. Basically he was a nobody to make massive political promises to the Arabs. Still, many Arabs think Lawrence's promises to them should have been honoured by the western powers and had they done so, Israel would not be a major issue in the ME. Only in that context the conspiracy theory takes hold - a pro-Arab hero was killed by the British secret services.
