Lawrence, American Tactician Submitted by Amfortas (United Kingdom), Jun 6, 2010 at 14:16 Very interesting and well-made comment about Wingate, still a little-known figure in the UK, though there is a statue of him in London outside the MoD. Perhaps he is better remembered in Israel? He was an eccentric to be sure, but not, it seems, after the rather questionable fashion of arabists such as T.E. Lawrence and of course Thesiger. Have to take exception to your last paragraph though: I don't think that Britain emerges from the circumstances of the end of the Mandate with any honour intact, but it's still a bit steep to tar us with the brush of the people that my grandfather's generation fought WWII against.
