When Elections Trump Civic Institution Building & The Teaching Of Tolerant Norms, NOTHING Civil Can EmergeReader comment on item: Iraq's Cosmetic Election Submitted by Adina Kutnicki (Israel), Mar 9, 2010 at 12:24 In a very twisted irony the purple finger has become the symbol of democracy .In a pig's eye. Elections, or rather selections, are no more a guarantee of democracy than banning guns will stop murders. The fact of the matter is that form has supplanted substance in the most dangerous areas of the world. IF elections per se have taught us anything, Exhibit Number One should be the jihadist election win of Hamas, followed by the super jihadist election win of Hizbullah within Lebanon's Parliament. Who in their right mind can now conclude that conducting elections precludes terrorists from running for office? In an Orwellian sense it is the emphasis on elections-uber alles-before real reforms in civic life take place, which allows the enemies of western civilization to come out on top.
