Logical Next Steps?Reader comment on item: In Europe, Remorse Has Turned to Masochism Submitted by Ron Thompson (United States), Jun 15, 2010 at 12:33 I think this is a superb review of a superb book . (Even if the review is 4 years delayed, this book just gets more relevant and timely with each successive failure of nerve and common sense by European leaders, and sometimes, as with Spain in March, 2004, by a whole people). Here's a suggestion for what should come next from some true leader or figure of heft (are there any left, say like Andrei Sakharov in the '70's and '80's, or Winston Churchill in the 1930's?). Such a leader should say: "The plight of the Palestinians in Gaza, through their passivity, hatred of Israel and Jews as taught by their religious leaders, and their support of pro-terrorist political leaders, are 95-99% responsible for their predicament. Given the behavior and words of their leaders over more than 60 years, it is not the responsibility of the West, the United States, and least of all the Israelis, to relieve them of the consequences of the folly of their own actions and those they either support or do not speak out against. It is the responsibility of true leadership in the West, aware of the danger to their own peoples, and to the national security and civilizational values of the West, to recognize that the present approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must lead either to the eventual destruction of Israel, or to the continued festering of this problem due to the absolute veto power of any compromise settlement by the rejectionists and terrorists. Therefore it is the policy of this government (France, England, Poland, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, whoever) to drop all calls for and advocacy of a Palestinian State west of the Jordan River until the following conditions are met: 1) A complete cessation of all government and government-supported teachings of religious Hatred of Jews and non-Moslems in both Gaza and the West Bank, this cessation to be monitored by an independent national monitoring committee made up of all groups subject to these teachings of hatred, and 2) Full recognition and opening of diplomatic relations with the State of Israel by Saudi Arabia, which sees it self as the moral leader of the Arab world, and at least two other Arab States, because this is the only step which will remove the incentive of the rejectionists of any 'peace' that does not include the destruction of Israel. If these two conditions are not met in a timely fashion, say within two months, then it shall become the policy of this government to advocate either for some sort of Palestinian State to be carved out of other Arab territory, or for a phased and compensated withdrawal of the Palestinian people from all lands west of the Jordan River.
