Pénitence, OrphanReader comment on item: In Europe, Remorse Has Turned to Masochism Submitted by Alexandre Ferreira (Brazil), Apr 26, 2015 at 18:22 As Chesterton said in his book Orthodoxy, there are plenty of virtues on Western Civilisation that have lost their original inspiration and now are running separated from their sisters. Can we find any communist of any time that would not justify the totalitarian state with one foot on charity and the other on justice? Of course, lost the christian sense of the christians statements -- and I mean the personal responsibility of being a just, benevolent and, by consequence, a good person --, what we see arising is a bureaucratic sytem that seeks to replace that sense of responsibility. For a hypocrite, of course, with the excuse of good-willing ends (but only which he chooses properly for the situation) could be justified any atrocity. Leftists do it till today while defending communist's criminal régime or the craziness of muslim theocracies (at least in my country, and, believe me, they exist*). If this is true to justice and charity, as we see every blessed day in media, would be any difference with the sacrament of contrition (pénitence**)? Not at all. Once again, people no more search in their own life the meanings and justifications for action, but find all sins and deposit all hope in the abstraction of a State. It is the abolition of the "man" as individual, the abolition of free thinking. I will buy the book as soon as possible. :) * I am brazilian, and a true admirer of America. One day I'll visit your country. By the way, I beg you pardon for any mistake with the words. ** The expression "pénitence" reveals a lot for a latin ear. Actually, the whole point of my comment is the "contrition", and not the "guilty". Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
