As is clear from the history of the verse, the prophet thought the word meant "read" and he protested until he came to understand that it meant recite. Additionally, we know that there isn't a single thing that anyone has determined he wrote. Even the Quran was not initially written but memorized and recited. The word Quran itself means "proclamation", not "reading" - it comes from the same root as iqra good try, dhimmi (actually not so good) - back to elementary school you go :-)
