These are brilliant achievements -- but please leave out the oil shaleReader comment on item: Remarkable Israel Submitted by Ami S. (Israel), Jun 14, 2011 at 07:12 Thanks for the great article. Israel has succeeded in many areas, and we Israelis are proud of it. But one thing sticks out like a sore thumb. The planned oil shale extraction will involve heating the soil in the center of Israel to 650F for several years ). The sulfurous crude and methane that leaked out will pollute the air and water, and the access roads will overrun the parks. Dr. Pipes, you know as well as anyone how oil corrupts countries. The profits from this shale, if any, will go to some US multi-millionaires, not to Israelis -- the fact that the shale sits under Israeli soil means nothing. So, let's keep the focus on Israel's achievements. But leave the oil shale out.

Daniel Pipes replies: Part of the achievement is discovering new ways, less costly in money and pollution, to make use of the oil shale. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (49) on this item
