Liberalism?Reader comment on item: Push Back on the University Front Submitted by Gunther H. Schiff (United States), Jul 7, 2011 at 01:44 A liberal is not a leftist. Liberals are persons who are willing to consider in a given situation what is the best answer. Conservatives give credence basically only to what has been tried and what they consider true. among the tried experiences. Leftist are frequently persons imbued, on one lever or another with the basic ideas of Karl Marx and others who want to (theoretically) distribute all assets equally among all people without consideration of the fact that this sort of generosity simply cannot work, as proven over and over what may start out with dreams of social and economic parity, soon resolves itself into dictatorship or oligarchy(Communist Russia, for instance with Dachas and cars for the powerful and starvation and death for those not among the political elite). A liberal should be a person with an open mind and few pre-conceived and untested notions notions; who will consider all possibilities and make choices with an open mind and not based on old prejudices and stubbornly held pre-conceived notions. Whatever may be the nomenclature applied t such persons, it is the way to move forward with the best results. Reasoned disagreement is welcome but not comments that are scurrilous, off-topic, commercial, disparaging religions, or otherwise inappropriate. For complete regulations, see the "Guidelines for Reader Comments". Daniel Pipes replies: I accept the liberal-leftist distinction and see the universities increasingly as leftist. << Previous Comment Next Comment >> Reader comments (22) on this item
