No more Dutch tanks is a disaster?Reader comment on item: Assessing the U.S. Global Military Force Submitted by Robert (Belgium), Jan 22, 2012 at 03:10 The Netherlands' decision to shed its tanks copies its decision to drop the horse-drawn streetcar, wooden shoes and a merchant marine powered by wind only. These things were useful, once. Tanks are loud, cumbersome, pricey, vulnerable and hard to transport. They guzzle vast amounts of fuel, eat up maintenance and operating personnel and have no strategic or tactical value in Europe or Afghanistan or Africa. Nor in the Amazon jungle or on the North Pole. The Dutch will not let their military can prepare for the last war. Hmmmm. You think the US Congress and Pentagon will take a cue?
