It would have made all the difference to the thousands who were massacred after the Dutch forces left the village. Tanks can stop any concentration of infantery forces. That is of great defensive value. Fighter planes and helicopters can do the same thing but they have serious limitations: they "guzzle vast amounts of fuel" in larger amounts than tanks. As a result mission times of fighter planes and helicopters are measured in minutes. Even worse, they are delicate and vulnerable compared to a heavily armored tank.
