Reader comment on item: Jews and Muslims Switch Sides

One expects a Jew to support Israel? That premise in itself is a faulty one.

Whether we think it correct or not, there are multitudes of Jews who do not support Israel, either as a religious fealty (neturei karta) or as a liberal political aversion and an instinctive empathy for the (perceived) downtrodden and oppressed. Much of politics is about self identification and many of these people are insecure about their perceived humanism for some reason. Many Jews, as well as non-Jews, voted for Mr Obama because they liked how it made them appear, as fair and un-racist progressive people. Liberals need to feel good about themselves and their politics do not lend well to the media reportage of Israel as an aggressor or oppressor. So they will take any steps necessary to reconcile these feelings in themselves. Feeling good about themselves will trump every time the duty of identifying as Jews by supporting Israel. This is why they will tell you that supporting Israel is a complicated affair, because their priorities are not with Israel.

I have said it after the 2008 US elections, the faulty assumption that everyone but Obama and his advisers made (probably because he has nominal Jews on his advisory team who have no identity to Israel) was that Israel was a determining voting factor for the Jewish vote. It obviously was not the case.
