"Generalizing" and categorizingReader comment on item: Jews and Muslims Switch Sides Submitted by Dylan (United States), Aug 12, 2012 at 04:32 ... *Farzana Hassan is a member of a "progressive" Muslim group and isn't taking a particularly controversial stance by wishing for the burka to be banned. I happen to find it a difficult question as most of those supporting the burka's ban use it as an entry point for all other sorts of ugly politics. *As for Rubin's "Nation" essay, I don't have access to it, so I can't comment. Ajami was taken apart in the April 28, 2003 issue in an essay by Adam Shatz (also Jewish): http://www.thenation.com/article/native-informant Aviv works for a civil rights organization and often represents cases that restrict that rights of vulnerable minority groups. Rubin is an academic and isn't beholden to irrational orthodoxies with regards to Israel. Rubin was taking to task a man whose income and celebrity has skyrocketed since he abandoned the Palestinians in the 1980s.
