The difference is that the boundaries of Germany and indeed Europe reflect for the most part historical realities of the nations involved. The boundaries of Syria, and almost all of the British and French former colonies reflect only the convenience of conquerors. True, the Syrians and other nations speak a common language, Arabic. But these nations are divided by clan, tribe, religion and even race. And large minorities such at the Kurds are spread across many nations. The fact is, while there is a "German" people, as there is a French or Spanish people, there is no Syrian people. There never has been. There has never been an Iraqi people. These are arbitrary names and lines on a map. These places have usually been controlled by others. In truth, Lebanon is a totally artificial French creation to give the local Christians a nation of there own. How has that worked out.
