The Copts and the maronites and the Chaldeans and the Syrian Christians and IsraelReader comment on item: Remembering Thatcher, Persecution of Christians, Dealing with Syria Submitted by dhimmi no more (United States), Apr 13, 2013 at 07:53 Yuval wrote But did the Copts ever protest kicking out the Jews? I wish that the relations between Israel and the Copts and the Maronites and the Chladean and the Syrian Christians and the Armenians are all that simple The founders of the modern state of Israel had no clue about the ethnic and religious mix that one would find in the Middle East and I suspect they viewed the Middle East in terms of Arabs and Jews not realizing that this is far from the truth There was a very interesting meeting that took place between Menachem Begin and Bachir Gemayel in 1982 two weeks before he was assassinated and it really explains why Christains in the Middle East do not expect to be helped by Israel in their calamities On 1 September 1982, two weeks before his assassination and only one week after his election, Bachir met the Israeli Prime minister Menachem Begin in Nahariya. During the meeting, Begin demanded that Bachir sign a peace treaty with Israel as soon as he took office in return of Israel's earlier support of Lebanese Forces and he also told Bachir that the IDF will stay in South Lebanon if the Peace Treaty wasn't signed. Bachir was furious at Begin and told him that the Lebanese Forces didn't fight for seven years and that they didn't sacrifice thousands of soldiers to free Lebanon from the Syrian Army and the PLO so that Israel can take their place. Bachir also added that he will not sign the Peace Treaty without national consensus on the matter. The meeting ended in rage and both sides weren't happy with each other.[20] Begin was reportedly angry at Bachir for his public denial of Israel's support. Bachir refused signing a peace treaty arguing that time is needed to reach consensus with Lebanese Muslims and the Arab nations. This angered the Israelis because they knew that it is almost impossible for the Lebanese Muslims to agree on a Peace Treaty. They realized that Bachir was starting to distance himself from them.[21] It seems that Bachir Gemayel was very angry for the way he was treated by Begin (he was quoted as saying that Begin "treated me like a child and not as an equal and even worse he has no clue about the enemies of his own state", and that he expected the leaders of Israel to be more understanding of the goals of the Maronites and he told who ever was listening that the leaders of Israel have no clue about the dynamics and politics of the Middle East and that he, Bachir Gemayel, knows his enemies very well and speaks their language and share their culture and at the end of the day he has to deal with them and live with them and Menachem begin did not care or understand This very simple incident is a clear example of the disconnect between the Christians that live in the Middle east and the Jewish state Did they protest the incessant wars on the Jewish State, Let me ask you a question: what do you think would have happened to a Copt in Nasser's Egypt who would protest such wars? Any guesses? or the sponsorship of"Jihad in the Gaza Strip? No they did not. Copts can also tell you that the attacks on Gaza the likes of the 1954 raids by the IDF that led to the death of many Egyptian soldiers did not spare the Copts that were part of the Egyptian army so why should they care about Israel you tell me Having said this if you happen to be a Copt and you live in Egypt and you hear every day about el-3adew el-sahioni or the Zionist enemy you will be brain washed in no time and indeed if you listen to even Father Zakaria Botros who has no like for Islam but he also has no like for Israel for all the wars with Egypt so how do you explain it Now calamity is their lot And are you happy with this calamity? You tell me and you know what? the Copts and the maronites and the Chaldeans and the Syrians and the Armenians have lived among Muslims for a long time and i suspect that they will survive this calamity albeit with less numbers with out your help Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
