A stark situationReader comment on item: Intricacies of Egypt's Coup d'état Explained Submitted by Jeff (United States), Jul 9, 2013 at 16:06 Yes, Debanjan, I guess it does reflect a stark situation, the years of state-run economies, religious and gender discrimination, Islamic laws, tribalism and largely (carefully kept) illiterate populations, resulting in needing the West, in its death throes, to send billions of dollars every year to fend off starvation. Listening to highly educated holy men who tell you not to immunize your children mysteriously hasn't seemed to have helped much either. A pity those vast multitudes of supporters in Egypt seemed so small (and so violent) compared to the 14 million plus that demonstrated for representative government. But, perhaps you're right, perhaps the Iranian model, where if the government doesn't like a women's choice of clothing, she's thrown in prison, where Bahais are murdered and Christians arrested and tortured for attending church, where peaceful protest is met with bullets, where owning a dog is a crime and temporary, 2 hour marriages are OK, is more suited to the prevalent socio-cultural tendencies of the Muslim world. And perhaps Egypt under Morsi, with its mounting violent attacks on Christians and Christian churches, was also similarly more suited. They're obviously more suited to you. May I ask why you choose to live in a democracy based on the western model? Am I correct in assuming you're planning to move to some more suited place, like the Islamic Republic of Iran or the Islamic Republic of Pakistan? After all, your money's on the second model.
