Accepting reality

"The demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state is a trap for Abbas, who cannot do so because of the many Arabs living within Israel."

How can this be a trap for Abbas ? Without accepting it, how is he going to build trust with Israel for a lasting peace. There have been many officially "Islamic" states who started with far less proportional population of Muslims - for example Malaysia .
