The US is becoming more of a threat to Israel than RussiaReader comment on item: Russia and the Middle East: A tour d'horizon Submitted by Michael S (United States), Feb 10, 2015 at 10:25 HI, Tovey You have helped me to remember, why all this talk about the Temple and the End Times is important to what is going on in the Middle East. People have many different ideas about what the scriptures mean concerning these things, but those meanings aren't necessarily that important. What is truly important, is the fact that so many people, from all the Abrahamic religions, have such an interest and are motivated to action by it. There is a deeply religious aspect of the goings-on in the region, on all sides -- not just among the Jihadis. This is something that our government, and most European governements, is putting on blinders against. This renders those governments completely incapable of reasoned action; and explains our extremely confused policies in the area. I personally don't think Russia will be a major player in the Middle East. I was shocked two years ago, when the Russian fleet surpassed the American fleet in its control of the Eastern Mediterranean. Coupled with its interest in maintaining docking and repair facilities in Syria, it seemed that Putin & Co. Were about to become major players. Since then, though, the Russians have been cultivating ties with other countries in the region, such as Cyprus and Egypt (a de facto Israeli ally), making them less reliant on Syria. At the same time, Iran has been demonstrating that it, not Russia, is in charge in the Middle East; and that they have formed a de facto alliance with the United States in the war against ISIS. The upshot of this movement is that Israel may have to keep an even more wary eye on its presumed "ally" in Washington, than on Mr. Putin.
