Was Islam more kind to black Africans than Christianity was?

It is very interesting to read about black Islamic slaves in the New World. It seems that the author attributes to the Muslim slaves most of the qualities for which we admire black slaves:

--the resistance of the Maroons
--the Black American song genres like "The Blues"
--the work of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman
--for building and mechanical skills
--for many of the practices in Santeria, and Voodoo

It seems that the great contributions of of groups like the Akan people of Ghana/Gold Coast are being over-looked or being misappropriated in the enthusiasm generated by this important historical contribution.
