McCarthyism? Only the government.Reader comment on item: Debating Campus Watch Submitted by Christopher (United States), Oct 1, 2002 at 00:32 Let's be real. Only the Governments can be remotely 'McCarthyite'. (btw, subsequent history has pretty much vindicated McCarthy...) Only a government has the power, backed by use of force, to enforce McCarthyism...and the more I've read, the more I'm convinced that the guilty were trying to hide behind the freedoms of a free republic...A private organization monitoring public employees is not McCarthyite. Indeed, a private organization monitoring a private organization is not McCarthyite. Private organizations don't have the deadly force power of the Government behind them. They can't raid you in the middle of the night and execute you as an 'enemy of the people' as happens all too often in Islamic countries. All they have is the power to record and inform the public about those who want to hide from the public. That's not McCarthyism. That's democracy in action. That's the freedom of the Press. These so-called 'professors' have something to hide. Oh yes, as I have read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, there is no right to not be criticized, there is no right to not be offended, indeed, there really isn't a 'right to privacy'. However, I do find a right for students to sue their Professors/Teachers for not providing the education that they paid for... I think it's called 'false advertising'... I expect this to 'trickle down' to the public high schools... I can't wait for the first person that sues the public schools for 'false graduation'...(I have a diploma but I'm functionally illiterate! Indeed, two victims here, the student, obviously, and the parents, who not only paid for their child, they pay for all children ad infinitum...) (Chris unfortunately missed out on all of the fun in college. He attended a private religious university, and was forced to listen to, and/or offer, the prayers that all Calculus classes started with...Despite those prayers, Chris still can't speak German w/o a Spanish word or two creeping in...)
