The War with Iraq is heating up...here in Vancouver !

Reader comment on item: Campus Watch - A Good Idea?

Submitted by Joyena Abraham (Canada), Oct 1, 2002 at 16:24

I really think that Campus Watch is an absolute necessity, and so timely considering the issues we are being faced with. I know for a fact that even courses in campuses in Canada are not exempt from lecturers trying to influence students with their political agendas and ideologies rather than presenting them with the facts which would allow them to make their own appropriate and moral choices.

For instance, just last week, on an International Relations course at UBC, the lecturer started off by asking the class how many were/were not in favour with a war in Iraq, and promptly proceeded to give all his reasons (none of which included salient facts about Mr. Hussein's collection of arms and weapons of mass destruction, and tendency to attack neighbouring countries or involvement in terrorism).

His theme was that the manipulation of American citizens and domestic issues, rather than security issues and foreign policy, were what caused Bush Sr. to enter the fray when it came to the Gulf War, and so it is likewise for Bush Jr. in this current War with Iraq.

He held sway over the majority of the students in that class, I fear, and it is this kind of misinformation that must be challenged.

Just a few days ago, on the streets in Vancouver, here on the Lower Mainland, I saw at least 3 huge posters up at bus-stops and overhead advertisement signs showing the Statue of Liberty wearing a round of ammunition around her chest, and with a rifle raised in one hand. If a picture paints a thousand words, then that poster is saying "America the Warmonger...........Iraq............" It seems that the poster was put up by a national newspaper, 'The Globe and Mail'. It is really a case of deja-vu, typical media misrepresentation of Israel, and now the upcoming war with Iraq.

The War with Iraq is really heating up alright, right here on the Lower Mainland...........
