The big question though is what does it mean to "take Putin seriously" in this context? I'd say it means we'd better be thinking now about how to respond to any nuclear strike. And about responses to different strike scenarios (a strike by Russia on Western Ukraine? on a target outside the former USSR?). Any hint of a threat along these lines (and there have been such threats recently from individuals in the Russian government) should NOT cow us into any less support for those, like the vast majority of Ukrainians, who refuse to be subjugated into a new "USSR".
