Going Back Thirty YearsReader comment on item: Take Vladimir Putin's Nuclear Threats Seriously Submitted by Malcolm Smith (Australia), May 6, 2022 at 21:42 I remember Victor Suvorov made the same claim in his book, "Inside the Soviet Army." I also remember that Gorbachev said, in retrospect, there were two things which made him introduce glasnost. The first was Reagon's "star wars" program of defence against missiles. He realised that it would bankrupt the Soviet Union to attempt to defeat it. The second was the Chernobyl disaster, which made him realise that a nuclear war would be far worse, and unwinnable.
