Why do we have departments of ME studies in so many US universities

Dear Readers,

This is regarding Michael Weiss' post about Nader Hashemi's fanciful statement that the person who tried to kill Rushdie may have been a Mossad agent. My core question is that why University of Denver has a Center of Middle eastern studies in the first place? Why does every university have a tax payer funded funded department to apologize for Islam? As we say in Hindi, "if there are no bamboos there will be no noisy flutes". We need to reduce the number of departments of ME studies.
