Dont want to say I told you so...Reader comment on item: Symposium: Turkey: The Road to Sharia? Submitted by Levent (Turkey), Mar 12, 2006 at 22:01 "It is not that I don't like Turks. I love Turks. But, what about their anti-Americanism and their support for Radical Islam and Sharia?"The more of your posts I read the more I realise what we are dealing with is a basic lack of a grasp of reality. Why are you appealing to American readers to take your side? And in doing so, why are you making stuff up? According the the latest Global Scan survey earlier this year, Turkey had the 3rd least negative view of the US of all European countries surveyed - UK, Germany, France, Finland, Russia, Spain etc hold a far more negative view. Turkey has always lived up to her NATO and UN responsibilities and carried large roles in doing so. Our objections to Iraq have proven wise and we turned down a rather large bribe in doing so. How many EU nations were there? In reality, the EU is just as easily divided and ruled as the Arab league. The US gets its cheque book out and EU solidarity suddenly disintegrates. But frankly that is in line with the rest of your assertion. Love of radical islam, sharia?! This is raving, frothing at the mouth lunacy. I told you way back in November that the radical islam is in Europe, not in Turkey - and if you doubted it then, having seen all the rioting in France and all the riots over the cartoons throughout the continent, you sure as hell should not doubt it now. Your beloved Europe was killed long ago by your migration policies that are too far gone to reverse now. These people are citizens of Europe now and you can do NOTHING about stopping them reproducing and bringing over more by marriage. It was not Turks burning out your cars or your embassies. You need to get over the EU - it is just a trading bloc, not some cultural identity - and despite all these federal ambitions it will never really be anything more. You really think the UK is going to share its nuclear technology with Estonia? Did Iraq not prove to you there will never be a common foreign policy? Even the single market is still a plan rather than a reality after all these decades. Look at all the current disputes about protectionism by individual member states - nobody even bothers sticking to the budgetary rules. The EU would have been good for Turkey 20 years ago and you could have had her on your terms back then. Now it is too late. We have solved our own problems and are growing very steadily. We have a massive working population and the demographics ensure that things will get better and better for us now that our European neighbours are no longer communists that are no good for trade. Where do you intend to find the workers to continue your pension pyramid scheme? How many more future generations pension will you squander here and now trying to continue this socialist utopia that cannot work with working populations of less than 50%. We will continue with the negotiations in the short term just to keep the massive inward investment coming in. But when the end of this budget cycle comes and the issue of Turkey in the EU arises again - the question will be what is in it for us. We have spent the best part of our existence on the front lines against communism and against radical islam - we have submitted to neither. Now things can only get better and better for us. Do you see the surge of activity with all the energy markets in Asia? Our ancesteral central Asian links and the close ties we hold with them will hold us in good stead. For the first time I see a very bright future for Turkey. One that is not in the EU unless it is on our terms. The EU can remain stagnant and locked in from the world by Russia and Turkey. Especially now that the EU backed PKK terror group has been defeated despite your best efforts. On that note, that support now means you have a Kurdish mafia operating heroin/protection rackets throughout Europe that is more powerful than any New York family could ever have dreamed of. Another self-inflicted predicament. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
