Keeping Europe EuropeanReader comment on item: Symposium: Turkey: The Road to Sharia? Submitted by Tom (Finland), Mar 16, 2007 at 09:25 Greetings from Finland, There are many many reasons stated why Turkey should not join the EU, but the reason why an average European does not want Turkey into our Union is quite simple: we just don't want them. I am highly interested in international politics and for Europeans there are currently two hot topics: both our weird and unique neighbours Russia and Turkey. Russia of course is as a partner much more important to us than Turkey can ever be, and in fact, Turkey is only interesting to European Union for the sake of Russia. Turkish usage is sinking lower and lower for us for two reasons: Russia has stabilized her exsistence and is becoming more trusthworthy partner than Turkey, and oil soon belongs to past. Anyway, I am not here to list ups and downs of the possible Turkish membership in the European Union, but to explain why common European citizen does not want Turkey into the Union. As I said ,Turkey has been only a way to involve less with Russians but now when Europe and Russia are starting to live in a symbiosis Turkey becomes less useful and thus I see no point investing huge piles of money into rebuilding Turkish economy when the money can be invested into rebuilding the long gone glory of those old Soviet Democratic Republics in Eastern Europe. Even though Europe is with no doubt the most educated continent in the world, most Europeans don't really know what is the difference with Turkey and Syria for example. Sure Turkey is a member of NATO but hey, even Muammar Gaddafi's Lybia is now a days licksplitting the United States of America. The major religion in Turkey is obviously Islam, which has been in really negative light for past decades. Europeans consider Islam decadent religion supressing some things, for example women rights. And you cannot blame us for that, seeing women forced to wear those silly all covering curtains on them seems quite old fashioned. Even we Europeans have critical look for the USA I bet you can't find an European having symphaty for Palestinians after 9/11 when all news broadcasts showed motion picture from the West Bank where people were singing, dancing, doing that wild Allahu Akbar -thing, and generally enjoying the terrorist attacks of the day. It is sad indeed how media makes us think something. We think that Turks and same with them and Turks think that we are cruel nazi bastards trying to squeeze juice from them and leave them when they're useless. Finland has a really low number of foreign imigrants, by foreign, I mean people outside from Europe. most of our immigrants come from the Middle-East and, no I am not racist; I am a realist, they are the worst trouble makers ever. Even Finns are the most violent country in EU, almost every weekend someone gets beaten up or stabbed by usually a drunken Finnish male. the number of crimes is proportionally really low if compared with crimes committed by gypsies and immigrants from the Middle-East. Raping is a horrible and serious crime. currently in my town there is a gang of several males from Midde-Eastern countries raping women every weekend. People demand that all immigrants committing crimes should get a mail stamp in their arses and send back where they came from. This really does not promise any good for 70 millions of Turks' Union membership. Ignorance feeds the fear on both sides, in the Union and in Turkey. Who wants the Union to expand eastward then? The European business and Turkish government. European companies seek for a cheap places to do their business, although thanks to latest expansion they've mainly got new markets and don't pressure governements to expand the union that much, and as far as I know Turks have high hopes of European money saving their economical crisis and lifting the country back to its feet, which it seems not be able to do by itself. Turks seem to be proud of being Turks, and I guess they don't really consider themselves Europeans, like we don't consider them among us and I can tell you that most of us are really proud of being part of any nation we live in and also proud of being Europeans. There are many ups and downs in the possible Union membership of Turkey but the fact is that Europeans don't want Turkey in the Union and so don't want the Turks. Keep Europe European! PS: Still living in a country and standing proud before the flag which fought with the Nazis - if someone tried to invide my country, enslave my people and destroy my life I would ally with anyone else fighting the same enemy - accusing others for actions our fathers and their fathers did is just stupid.
