answer_to_abdellah covers the most salient points. However, I would add:

i) conversion by force - especially in Africa and the Phillipnines;

ii) people born into Islam (especially in developing countries) don't exactly have the option to decline membership in the religion;

iii) apostasy is considered a capital offence in Islam, so if one decides to renounce the religion or convert to another, they face the very real possibility of a brutal death. In fact, Salafis often consider moderate muslims to be apostates, and kill them anyway!
