Israel, too, is fighting a war of "resistance"Reader comment on item: Strange Logic in the Lebanon War Submitted by Dr RJP (United States), Aug 20, 2006 at 18:48 The word, "resistance," seems to be the word du jour for Arab countries to justify the actions of terrorist groups against Israel. They have used so much, and in so many situations, that it has lost its original meaning -- which was" to resist oppression {aka, the "occupation"}. As far as oppression goes, there is no comparisoon between what is committed by Arab government inside Arab countries against Palestinians and other minority groups, than could ever be falsely attibuted to Israel. For example, Egyptian :"Death squads" locking up or killing homeless "street children." Since Arabs are so keen on that term, and, of course, the oxymoron, "occupaiton," I think that it is time for Israel to adopt the same buzz words to describe its struggle for freedom: freedom from attacks, freedom from fear, freedom from hatred, and freedom from others usurping their land. If I were the PM of Israel (and I know I probably would have a short life span for my comments), I would tell the world hat Israel is fighting a legitimate war of resistance -- resisitance to being exterminated. I would say that since israel was here first, thousands of years before Arab imperialists made it part of their Caliphate, and is exercizing its "Right of Return" to the land stolen from them. I would also add that Israel is an occupied country where Arabs are the occupiers, and not the reverse. I would say that Palestinians already have their own state (Jordan) and do not need another. I would remind the UN that they are bound by law to implement the mandates established by the former League of Nations -- one of which is the establishment of a Jewish National Homeland. I would remind them that the United Nations created a partition plan (which still ignored the League of Nations mandate in terms of the land to be allocated to Jews) that Israel accepted but the Arab world rejected, and instead launched a war of extermination against Jews (which they lost). I would remind the world that Israel is under no obligation to return any land acquired during a defensive war, and the land that they did capture during the 1967 War was returned to Jordan and Egypt (with peace agreements certifying these transactions). I would remind the world that no other country in the world would allow another country or organization to carry out a war of extermination without acting in self-defense. I would remind the world that the "Palestinian problem" is solely the fault of Arab countries and the UN who desire to keep them in refugee camps as an excuse to blame Israel, and the Palestinians themselves for choosing leaders who embezzled the billions of dollars in aid to them, and who have spent the rest of that aid to acquire arms and rockets with which to attack Israel. I would remind the world that after the 1948 War, Arab countries expelled 850,000 Jews from their countries and TINY ISRAEL absorbed al lof these refugees...whereas the Arab countries who started the war would not take a single one of the 480,000 Palestinian refugees (at most) who fled Israel mainly on the urging of their leaders, especially the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Finally, I would remind the world that many Palestinians chose to remain in Israel during all of the Arab-Israeli wars and who have no desire to leave Israel. If Israel "oppresses" Palestinians, the maybe the world can explain why so many chose to stay there. Although the UN has chosen to ignore the League of Nations Mandate (about creating a Jewish homeland upon the land where Jordan, the West Bank, and Gaza now reside), the UN decided that the land Palestinians claim as their own is still under dispute whose final disposition was left to be worked out by both Israel and Palestinians. The Palestinians will not negotiate now, or ever. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please.
