pipes, give us a breakReader comment on item: Reagan's Early Victory in the War on Terror Submitted by michael (Switzerland), Jun 15, 2004 at 11:10 carter was lenient with the jihaddists, but reagan really pushed them to build an international robber's den in afghanistan. he was tough but only against the soviets and his mistake was precisely to pamper islamist terrorists supposing they would take the soviets and then go back knitting kilts. reagan's men like casey et. al. were building up an already fledging guerilla in afghanistan, favouring hekmatiar, a dyed-in-the-wool jihadist who used to be a non-entity in the first place. reagan was fighting an anti-cyclic soviet-union with a coming international plague, at that, with a vengeance. he surely wasn't the only short-sighted politician in the west, but please don't make him the hero of the fight against the jihaddists. he surely wasn't.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
