Don't Gloss Over Reagan's FailureReader comment on item: Reagan's Early Victory in the War on Terror Submitted by Stephen Volk (United States), Jun 21, 2004 at 21:15 While you may accurately depict the tough talk by then President-elect Reagan and the subsequent release of the Americans held captive in Iran, you gloss over the lack of response in Beirut. When 248 of our marines were murdered by a suicide car bomber, Reagan simply packed our bags and we left. Despite an act of war against us by the murderous Hezbollah, we had no response. This was probably the first sign to Muslim extremists that America was a toothless paper tiger with no means or will to fight. And no retaliation was ever taken in response to this murder of our servicemen who were placed in harm's way simply to put a buffer between warring Christians and Muslims fighting a civil war in Lebanon. This lack of response to so heinous an act certainly emboldened this radical violent group of thugs, and like minded others who took note of this unanswered crime, to press ahead with their violent agenda against Israel and the West.Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
