Baffled?

My 2 cents is that the Mullahs are afraid that even the smallest crack in the system could lead to its disintegration. Like when the Soviet Union started to unravel when Gorbachov just wanted to introduce a few reforms.

If they feel so insecure, they are extremely dangerous. Heaven or rather hell knows what they are capable of to remain in power. Starting a war was ever the way-out for domestically threatened dictators.
