the keys under the lamppost

This reminds me of a funny story. [I have in fact recently been the 'victim' of local law enforcement. I have been stopped three times in the past five years while driving - did not receive any citation - because I did not break any laws!). I, too, am a conservative white male.

A fellow is under the streetlamp outside his home at night looking down (I'll call him L), when a passerby (I'll call him PB) walks past and is curious.

PB "Are you looking for something?
L " I lost my keys"

PB Where did you lose them? I'll help you look

L "I lost them over there" [L points up the street about a hundred feet]

PB "IF you lost your keys over there, why are you looking here?

L "There's no streetlamp over there. It's brighter here"

Law enforcement doesn't care about apprehending criminals or terrorists. It is only interested in 1) preparing statistics and reports to make itself look good and receive further funding, and 2) controlling the population of law abiding citizens (this is less risky to LEO's) and has the additional function of stirring up the anger of citizens so that they do act in agressive ways and so then are more likely to be picked up by LEO's and extorted for funds.
