Brother and friendReader comment on item: America's Shiny New Palestinian Militia Submitted by Kurt Basking (United States), Mar 18, 2010 at 03:08 Dear Dr Pipes: Any US effort to help PA military forces is indeed stupid. It is sad but true that Islamic political forces can never be appeased and a non-Islamic state can never get an Islamic state's gratitude. A very good example of this principle came to light when Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai had a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart. The border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been very violent in the last few decades and there have been hundreds of examples of wanton killings. It is not clear who is killing whom and why but apparently a lot of people who live in Pakistan kill on the other side of the border and the favor is promptly returned. In these circumstances you will expect that the relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan will be less than brotherly. Right? Imagine what will happen if the Canadians cross border to kill in the US and vice versa. But there is no such ill will between Pakistan and Afghnistan. During the above mentioned summit Karzai declared that India is a good friend but Pakistan is a brother. You go figure now. India is building roads, school and mosques in Afghanistan and granting Indian citizenships to Afghanistani refugees. When it comes to brotherly love, nothing comes in the way.
